Senator Elizabeth Dole

Just as I had herded all the Canton Akron cats into my frame, along came Mrs. Dole to throw some light on the image. She has taken over for Senator Dole and her presence is as large as his. She is ever gracious and has a empathy with people that is stunning to experience. We made some pictures of her today for a museum exhibit on her accomplishments which are significant! She’s been a good friend to Honor Flight and is currently spending a lot of time with America’s Wounded Warriors.

I should mention here that I am moving the WWII Memorial blog from Typepad over to my WordPress site to see if I can work out some “continuity.” I may keep both hosts for a bit so the blogs don’t get lost too quickly. Have a look at some of the events that have occurred over the past seven years!

Squeeze Em In! Smuckers Flies Honor Flight

My carefully planned photograph of the 200 person Canton Akron Honor Flight went off without a hitch. I was adding and subtracting people to make them fit into the frame of my “not wide enough” lens! Worked like a charm! The Smuckers Corporation sponsored two Honor Flights so far. And I’m going to be drinking their coffee and eating whatever they make! I believe in supporting sponsors and Smuckers not only sponsored, they had people on the ground!

Rocky Mountain Honor Flight May 18 2012

Mary Haddon of Rocky Mountain Honor Flight was at the WWII Memorial with about thirty veterans and their guardians. The weather was DC at its best and promised to continue for the weekend which is supposed to be jam-packed with flights. The veteran on the left was celebrating his 93rd birthday. You can see more pictures in our print gallery where they are downloadable for free.

Jane Howitt began working with me a couple of months ago and studio productivity has skyrocketed. She oversaw the revision of the WWII Memorial book through its final stages and is now deep into the revision of the DC PHOTO BOOK. She is also working on a series of posters which we soon hope to see go into print. This one has possibilities for a cover as well

Cherry Blossoms: 100 Years

The Cherry Blossom Festival has been extended this year to accommodate a record 2 million visitors. I’ll be down at the Cherry Blossom Festival Welcome area signing WWII MEMORIAL: Jewel of the Mall and DC PHOTO BOOK: An Insider’s View for the National Park Service. Eastern National, an educational affiliate of the Park Service will have a tent erected (see events) and a couple of authors signing books. It’s the beginning of Spring and it will be a pleasure to be in the center of what has to be one of the beautiful sights in the world….and I think the most photographed. There’s a photographer under every tree! And rain or shine, you can’t miss!

WTTG FOX 5 is doing their March 23rd broadcast live from the Tidal Basin and I will be spending a couple of minutes talking with them about not only the Cherry Blossoms but also the amazing architecture on the Mall. I am looking forward to a great couple of weeks! Washington is a photographer’s dream city and I love watching everyone trying to capture the spirit of renewal and peace symbolized in these trees.

WWII MEMORIAL BOOK REVISION!

PREVIEW! Due to arrive mid June 2012. The WWII Memorial book will be 28 pages thicker with a gloss 140 lb stock on the cover. Sculptor Ray Kaskey’s use of the “lost wax” process is examined in more detail and a new section called a “A Living MemoriaL” documents the day-to-day activities that make this Memorial so unique.

Honor Flight Summit: Feb 2012

120 Honor Flight leaders from probably thirty states gathered at the BWI Hilton this weekend to discuss the flight procedures, health issues, safety, public awareness and fund raising and prepare begin another season of bringing WWII Veterans to DC. It was great meeting people who are interested in service. It does make you feel better about everything and in this jaundiced DC photogrpher's mind, Honor Flight will become synonymous with the best of America in the coming decades. I gave a short talk on photo libraries, the best places on the Memorial to take photos and how to do a pan if your lens isn't wide enough to get the whole group in the picture.

I signed eight cases of books and hung out in the lobby chatting with people I normally see for a few minutes at the Memorial. They are distinguished by their good humor, kindness and dedication. Great weekend!

Kaskey Studio Site

Sculptor Ray Kaskey who sculpted the the WWII Memorial elements just completed assignments for the “International Brotherhood of Teamsters” and the “International Union of Operating Engineers.” I added twelve pages to the site and updated the “Commissions” page. I designed the site two years ago in Dreamweaver and still think it’s an elegant piece of code.

Annapolis Maritime Museum

L’Escargot Photos

Glen Rosenbluth was good enough to send me these images of L’Escargot, the Bristol 32 sailboat used for photography. Forty two of my images will be displayed this month at the Annapolis Maritime Museum. I will be speaking on photographing the Bay on January 26th and the opening reception will be January 27th. Check with the museum for details and directions.
